Diabetes with the set of endocrine-metabolic pathologies such as obesity and overweight represent one of the historical reference themes of the research at Ospedale San Raffaele, which in this area has acquired and consolidated over the years a considerable visibility and international reputation.
The Clinical Diabetes Centre at Ospedale San Raffaele, integrated with the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI), is renowned as a leading institution for diabetes care. The group has gained a reputation for consistent and innovative research and clinical care over the years, resulting in a growing rate of referrals of patients from the whole Italy and outside.
The integrated type 1 diabetes adult and paediatric outpatient clinics at San Raffaele follow more than 3,000 patients with type 1 diabetes (Adult - 1,200, Paediatric - 1,800); while another 3,000 adult patients with type 2 diabetes are regularly followed-up at the type 2 diabetes clinic.
Consolidated clinical and research expertise exists in the fields of technologies applied to diabetes (wearable insulin pumps and glucose sensors), prediction and prevention of type 1 diabetes (part of the international NIH-funded TrialNet consortium), immunotherapies, new drugs, islet, pancreas and kidney transplantation, diabetes and pregnancy, retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy, cardio-diabetes, and diabetic cardiovascular complications.
