The Clinical Diabetes Centre at Ospedale San Raffaele, integrated with the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI), is renowned as a leading institution for diabetes care. The group has gained a reputation for consistent and innovative research and clinical care over the years, resulting in a growing rate of referrals of patients from the whole Italy and outside.
The integrated type 1 diabetes adult and paediatric outpatient clinics at San Raffaele follow more than 3,000 patients with type 1 diabetes (Adult - 1,200, Paediatric - 1,800); while another 3,000 adult patients with type 2 diabetes are regularly followed-up at the type 2 diabetes clinic.
Consolidated clinical and research expertise exists in the fields of technologies applied to diabetes (wearable insulin pumps and glucose sensors), prediction and prevention of type 1 diabetes (part of the international NIH-funded TrialNet consortium), immunotherapies, new drugs, islet, pancreas and kidney transplantation, diabetes and pregnancy, retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy, cardio-diabetes, and diabetic cardiovascular complications.
