Keratoconus
What is it?
Keratoconus is an ectasia of the cornea which determines corneal thinning, steepening and irregular astigmatism.
Which are the symptoms?
Patients affected by keratoconus are affected by progressive visual loss determined by increasing astigmatism.
How is it diagnosed?
Keratoconus is diagnosed through a slit-lamp examination that may reveal corneal thinning and through corneal topography or tomography, which reveal an irregular corneal shape.
How is it treated?
In the first stages of disease, spectacles can help correct astigmatism. As the disease progresses, specialized contact lenses may be required and in advanced stages corneal transplantation may be necessary to improve vision. Keratoconus progression can be successfully halted in most cases with Corneal Collagen Cross-linking, a novel treatment that increases corneal rigidity with the objective of stabilizing the cornea.
