Biography
Dr. Francesco Azzolini heads the Functional Department of Operative Endoscopy at the Department of Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy of the IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele, under the supervision of Professor Silvio Danese. He also collaborates with the endoscopy service of the Policlinico San Marco in Zingonia.
Since 2017, he has been an adjunct professor and lecturer of the Integrated Gastroenterology course of the specialized Course of Medicine and Surgery at the Vita-Salute University of San Raffaele.
After graduating from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Bologna in 1995, he specialized in Gastroenterology and endoscopy in 2000 at the University of Modena, and then in General Surgery at the University of Ferrara in 2013. During his studies, he interns abroad at Jichi Medical University, Tochigi in Japan and at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University in Shanghai. In 2015, he completed a course of training and management certification for managers of healthcare companies at the Faculty of Economics and Commerce of the University of Parma.
Performs diagnostic and operative gastroenterological endoscopic interventions on the digestive organs (colonoscopy and diagnostic and operative gastroscopy), pancreas and biliary tract (esophageal, enteral, biliary and colonic prostheses) in planned and emergency cases.
Dr. Azzolini deals with endoscopic treatment of complex lesions of the esophagus, stomach, duodenum and colon, submucosal endoscopic dissection (ESD) in various tracts of the digestive system (esophagus, stomach, colon) and achalasia of the esophagus (he usually treats achalasia by all methods, in particular by oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM). Francesco Azzolini is also an expert in the treatment of gastroparesis with G-POEM.
As a researcher, he mainly deals with endoscopic treatment of colon adenomas, early gastric cancer and dysplastic lesions of the stomach and esophagus, achalasia and gastroparesis.
He is the author and co-author of more than 50 scientific articles published in industry journals, his Hirsch index is 7. Constantly participates in congresses and conferences of national and international importance. He is a member of the Italian Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SIED).
