Gabriele Fragasso

Biography

Dr Gabriele Fragasso is the head of the Functional Unit of Cardiac Insufficiency of the Operating Unit of Cardiology of IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele directed by Professor Alberto Margonato.

After graduating in Medicine and Surgery in 1982 from the University of Rome, he specialized in Nuclear Medicine at the Sapienza University of Rome in 1985. Then, he obtained his second specialization in Cardiology in 1990 at the University of Catania. During his studies, he spent time abroad at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital, London (now Imperial College), UK.

Over the years, Dr. Gabriele Fragasso has gained extensive experience in both non-invasive and invasive cardiology. In the early years of his practice, he gains extensive experience in right and left heart catheterization procedures, temporary ventricular pacing and pericardiocentesis, and management of acute cardiology patients. In recent years, he has worked mainly in the field of clinical cardiology and echocardiographic imaging, focusing mainly on patients with heart failure. Since 2007, he performs endomyocardial biopsies.

His scientific interests have been directed primarily at the metabolic and functional ties of ischemic heart disease and heart failure. He gives special attention to understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms of myocardial dysfunction.

Recently, his research has focused on assessing cellular, metabolic, and functional adaptation in heart failure of various etiologies, and identifying specific metabolic phenotypes along with potential therapeutic implications. Over the years, Dr. Fragasso has coordinated numerous international clinical research projects in cardiology.

Currently, he is Adjunct Professor of Cardiology at the University Vita-Salute San Raffaele of Milan for the Master of Science in Medicine in English (International Medical Doctor Program).

He is the author of 160 peer-reviewed publications, and his H-index is 29. He is also the author and co-author of 250 communications at national and international scientific congresses. He regularly participates in national and international congresses in the field. He is a reviewer for leading medical and cardiological journals worldwide, including The Lancet, Nature, Circulation, Cochrane Archives, American Journal of Cardiology, European Heart Journal.
