Luca Aldrighetti
Biography
Luca Aldrighetti is the Head of the Complex Operative Unit of Hepatobiliary Surgery at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele and Associate Professor at the University Vita-Salute San Raffaele.
After graduating in Medicine and Surgery with honors from the University of Milan (1989), he specializes in General Surgery and then in Thoracic Surgery with honors at the same university. Since 1989, he works at the Surgical Division of the IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele, and in 1992 he moves abroad to the Pittsburgh Transplantation Institute - Pittsburgh, PA, USA, where he completes a two-year Surgical Fellowship. In 1994, he returns to the IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele as the head of the Functional Liver Unit, and then, in 2014, becomes the head of the Complex Operative Unit of Hepatobiliary Surgery.
Prof. Aldrighetti's research and assistance activities are mainly focused on the diagnosis and treatment of hepatobiliary neoplastic diseases, treatment of portal hypertension and liver failure, and monitoring and treatment of the critical surgical patients, with particular attention to surgery of perilous cholangiocarcinomas and primary and metastatic liver neoplasms. As the first operator, he has done over 3000 liver resections (2004-2019). He is one of the world’s leading specialists in minimally invasive liver surgery. In particular, he has initiated and developed the program of laparoscopic liver resections at San Raffaele Clinical Institute, which is the national and international leader in this field, with a series of laparoscopic resections that currently count to more than 1200 cases.
He is President of the Italian Society of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery (AICEP). He is Founder, Past President and Scientific-Didactic Responsible of the Italian Group of Minimally Invasive Liver Surgery (I GO MILS), as well as responsible for the realization and coordination of the Italian Registry in which Ospedale San Raffaele is the center with the highest number of inclusions (more than 601 cases since 2015). He is a member of the Council and Chairman of the International Registry Committee 2019-2021 of ILLS (International Laparoscopic Liver Society) and Chairman of the 4th ILLS World Meeting that took place in Rome in May 2023.
He has special skills in surgery of perihilar cholangiocarcinomas; he is the direct developer of preoperative preparation optimization program aimed at reducing risks (complications and mortality) of this type of surgery. His current count is over 250 resections.
The scientific activity of Prof. Aldrighetti is also carried out through multi-institutional international collaborative projects - European and American – related to the outcomes and prognostic factors of hepatobiliary oncological surgery, the impact of ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) program in laparoscopic and laparotomic liver resection surgery, the outcomes of laparoscopic liver surgery and ALPPS procedure.
He is an author and co-author of 289 scientific publications in the most prestigious national and international journals, with a large number of citations (8070 – Scopus, 10845 – Google Scholar). His H index is 44 (Scopus) and 51 (Google Scholar). He is a member of 18 national and international scientific societies.
Prof. Aldrighetti holds various specialty courses in liver surgery at both the University Vita-Salute San Raffaele and IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele.
