Salivary gland scintigraphy
What is it?
This examination allows to study the functionality of the salivary glands through the intravenous delivery of a radiopharmaceutical and to follow its functionality in progress.
When is this exam indicated?
Chronic sialoadenitis: sarcoidosis, Sjogren's syndrome and autoimmune related diseases. In cases of chronic sialoadenitis there is a progressive reduction in the uptake of the injected tracer in proportion to the degree of functional impairment.
In acute sialoadenitis there is an increase in tracer uptake related to the hyperemic-inflammatory condition of these pathological processes. In the case of calculosis, it is possible, following the acid stimulus test, to evaluate the extent of the obstruction.
How is it performed?
The radiopharmaceutical used is Tc-99m pertechnetate that is delivered intravenously, is captured and accumulated in the major salivary, parotid and submandibular glands.
By analyzing the distribution of the tracer over time, it is possible to estimate the functioning of these glands.
For a more accurate assessment, the acid stimulus test can be accompanied by having the patient drink a small amount of lemon juice or other acidic substance to stimulate salivation.
