Devitalization
What is it?
Due to inflammatory processes or traumatic events, the dental pulp undergoes reversible transformations, which are treated by conservative procedures (fillings, inlays), or irreversible ones that instead involve root canal therapy or, as it is more widely known, devitalization. The purpose of root canal therapy is undoubtedly to allow the patient to preserve the tooth, which can then continue, no longer vital, to perform all its functions.
When is this procedure indicated?
Endodontic therapy is indicated in the treatment of both vital and necrotic teeth so patients can preserve natural teeth in function and aesthetics.
How is it performed?
Treatment includes:
- local anesthesia;
- pre-endodontic reconstruction of the dental crown, in case of particularly destroyed teeth, to contain the cleansing fluids used;
- isolation of the surgical field by a rubber dam: this highlights the tooth to be treated while protecting the oral cavity from ingestion of liquids or other toxic substances;
- actual therapy (opening of the pulp chamber, exploratory probing of the canals, cleansing, shaping and three-dimensional obturation of the root canal system, intraoperative and postoperative radiographs);
- referral to the relevant specialist colleague for finalization of the tooth element;
- periodic radiographic checks in case, for example, of monitoring wound healing.
The techniques and materials used include the most modern instrumentation and are strictly in line with endodontic methodologies supported by national and international scientific publications.
