Tomosynthesis or 3D-like mammography: what is it and why is it better than 2D?
Pietro Panizza
Biography
Dr. Pietro Panizza has been the Head of the Breast Imaging Department at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele Hospital in Milan since October 2015. He also collaborates with the Casa di Cura La Madonnina clinic.
In 1981, he graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan, where he specialized in Diagnostic Radiology and Radiotherapy, and Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy. He started his career as a specialist in Diagnostic Radiology at Ospedale Sant'Anna in Como in 1982, then he became Radiology Assistance at Ospedale Carate Brianza, Ospedale Fatebenefratelli in Erba (CO) and, finally, in 1985, at San Raffaele in Milan, where he was the head of the Functional Unit of Diagnostic Senology of the Department of Radiology from 1990 to 2011. In 2011, he became Director of the complex structure of Diagnostic Radiology at the National Institute of Tumors in Milan, where he remained until September 2015.
From 2001 to 2015, he was contract professor in various universities in Milan: University Vita-Salute San Raffaele, State University of Milan Bicocca and Statale University, as well as lecturer in medical courses and specialization in Diagnostic Radiology. During the same period, he was a lecturer at various courses in Breast MRI: Erasmus and EUSOBI (European Society of Breast Imaging). From 2010 to 2014, he was elected president of the Senology Section of SIRM (Italian Society of Medical and Interventional Radiology). Since 2015, he is a member of the Executive Board of EUSOBI, of which he is treasurer since 2018, and the Core Faculty of ESO (European School of Oncology). He is a member of the scientific committee of Europa Donna Italia, aBRCAdaBRA and Mamazone, associations dealing with problems related to breast cancer.
During his career, he has been a speaker at numerous national and international congresses and courses in the field of breast medicine. Dr Panizza is the author of numerous publications in scientific journals and several books on breast medicine. In 2008 and 2010 he participated in the Consensus Conference of EUSOMA (European Society of Mastology) for working out the EUSOMA guidelines on the indications for Mammary Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in young women. He is one of the authors of several EUSOBI monographs published and forthcoming in scientific journals explaining to women the various techniques of Senologic Radiology. Currently, he carries out research with studies funded by the European Community, the Veronesi Foundation and private persons, with particular interest in the use of infrared radiation in the diagnosis of breast cancer, in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Milan.
