Biography
Professor Ugo Elmore, an Associate Professor of General Surgery at “Vita-Salute” San Raffaele University in Milan, is the Director of the Strategic Program for Oncologic and Minimally Invasive Surgery of the Digestive System and Peritoneum at the Gastrointestinal Surgery Unit of IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital, led by Professor Riccardo Rosati.
Professor Elmore graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1996 from “La Sapienza” University of Rome, specialized in General Surgery in 2001, and earned a PhD in General Surgery and Endocrinology in 2005 from the same institution. Following his PhD, he completed significant training abroad at the Division of Laparoscopic Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York and the Division of Surgical Oncology at the Washington Cancer Institute.
In 2021, he was awarded the title of Professor ad Honorem by the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Cordoba, Argentina.
His main clinical interest is digestive system surgery, where he applies new minimally invasive techniques and technologies. Professor Elmore treats esophageal and stomach tumors, gastroesophageal reflux, functional esophageal disorders, colorectal cancer, and diverticular disease of the colon, using minimally invasive and traditional approaches. He leads a study group for peritoneal diseases arising from gastrointestinal tumors, treating these with both minimally invasive techniques (PIPAC) and cytoreductive surgery combined with intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). In endocrine surgery, he performs laparoscopic procedures for adrenal conditions.
In the field of day surgery, he performs laparoscopic cholecystectomy and abdominal wall repair, as well as anterior wall repair under local anesthesia. He is experienced in treating proctologic diseases, using standard techniques for hemorrhoid and rectal prolapse treatments in day surgery settings.
Professor Elmore’s surgical experience includes thousands of operations performed since the beginning of his career.
His research focuses on diseases of the upper and lower digestive tracts as well as the peritoneum. He participates as Principal Investigator and Co-investigator in various multicenter trials in collaboration with national and international centers.
He is a member of numerous professional associations, including the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES), European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO), International Gastric Cancer Association (IGCA), Italian Society of Endoscopic and Minimally Invasive Surgery (SICE), Italian Society of Surgical Oncology (SICO), Italian Society of Surgery (SIC), Italian Society for the Study of Esophageal Diseases (SISME), Italian Group for Research on Gastric Cancer (GIRCG), and is an Honorary Member of the Surgery Association of Cordoba-Argentina (ACC).
For several years, he has coordinated advanced laparoscopic surgery training courses for surgeons from various parts of Italy and Europe. He has published over 150 articles in international journals and has participated extensively in national and international conferences and courses.
